30-Day Movie Challenge. Day #4: A Movie That Makes You Sad
In America (2003)
Dir: Jim SheridanHas it been awhile since you’ve felt something watching a movie? Does run-of-the-mill Hollywood fare wash across you without the slightest tinge of genuine emotion? Jim Sheridan’s In America was co-written by his daughters, Kirsten and Naomi, and tells the story of an Irish family who illegally immigrate to New York City with the delusion of the American dream clouding their practical visions. Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton are impeccable as the mother and father, but it is the two girls, particularly Sarah Bolger, who play the daughters that dig in pull out every bit of emotion you have within you. I defy you not to shed a tear when Bolger’s Christy tells her father he doesn’t believe in God. In America is a powerful film that brings to light a reality so many have had to face.

30-Day Movie Challenge. Day #3: A Movie That Makes You Happy
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
Dir: Frank Capra
An incredible comedy classic. Capra and Cary Grant were never better. It shows that two people can find happiness amidst all the eccentricities, sometimes extremely dark eccentricities, that one side or the other brings to the table. It’s the perfect romantic comedy for someone who likes a bit of black with their cheer, and it’s ideal for a horror fan such as myself. Raymond Massey is stellar as a murderer who bears a striking resemblance to Boris Karloff (Karloff actually played this role in the stage version. However, the entire cast of characters is great and gives the film the charged sense of excitement and humor that has made it such a classic. -

Memory, oh, memory what is it you did bring?
I have brought you a recent dream from far across the sea
Down to the station where the train has pulled in
See the cars of silver and gold
The coal hits the fire and the wheels start to spin
Oh, you’re going ‘round the sun, don’t you know
Memory, oh, memory where is it I must go?
Away from here, but do not weep
Such wonders you will know
And it’s down to the station where the train has pulled in
See the cars of silver and gold
And the coal hits the fire and the wheels start to spin
Oh, you’re going ‘round the sun, don’t you know
